Wow, I always love music from Austin. This has got to be one of the best scenes around the country. Wild Child uses ukuleles, violins, cellos, and banjos, so I expected them to be really generic and typical in a sort of “I’m trying really hard to be different” kind of way, but that is not at all the case. This is a really, really great band. These rhythms are so much more driving than you’d expect from the usual folk band. I write so many reviews that I can’t afford to always buy the albums that I listen to on Bandcamp, but I’m probably going to buy this one. It’s amazing.
Pillow Talk is such a complete album. It’s fifteen tracks really explore lots of different styles, each done particularly well. From the casually conversational “Someone Else” or the saloon chants of “Cocaine Hurricane” to the pulsing of “The Escape”, this album really pulls off quite an ambitious collection.
“The Tale Of You & Me” and “The Escape” are my picks for best songs on the album, although I do standby the great worth of the album as a whole. These two are probably just the most initially enjoyable because of the strong rhythms. I’m a huge fan of gang vocals, and “The Tale Of You & Me” really closes the album off beautifully with it’s chanting “Sleep good! Hold tight! Just know that I’ll make it right!” and casual discussion.
This band is great. They’re playing around the country, and you would probably love to see them.
